It found that many single men believe the best way to save money is by being on your own.
The findings are bad news for millions of women as it suggests that famous singletons, such as George Clooney and super-spy James Bond, are the new role models for millions of British bachelors during the economic downturn.
A total of 47 per cent of the single men surveyed said they would spend more money than they currently do if they were to enter into a relationship.
It means that almost half of Britain's nine million men could soon all become so-called "Bachelors of Finance", according to Skipton Building Society, which carried out the research.
Jason Clarke, a Skipton spokesman, said: "In these results men certainly take the view that having a partner comes at a financial cost.
"If you want to try and bag yourself a man who knows how to save then head to Wales as the nation tops the polls when it comes to male savers - 16 per cent of men admitted to saving more than they spend, compared to the West Midlands, which came out bottom at just 9 per cent."
